Implant-retained dentures will feel far more natural in your mouth than standard dentures. This is because the implants connect your dentures to your jawbone in much the same way your teeth were once connected to it. You will likely find your implant-supported dentures retentive, stable and easier to eat and speak with. You’ll also notice that food tastes better as your upper teeth will no longer cover the roof of your mouth, and biting and chewing will become much easier.
Yes. With most implant-retained dentures you take the denture out yourself to clean it and soak it overnight, then simply clip it back onto the implants in the morning. You get the security of implants during the day with the easy cleaning of a removable denture at night. Your dentist will show you exactly how yours come on and off, and it soon becomes second nature.
It depends on your jaw, but as a rough guide we often use around two implants on the lower jaw and about four on the upper, where the bone tends to be softer. The bone you have available decides the final number, which we assess with a scan before recommending anything. As a rule, more implants means more stability, and we’ll balance that against what your bone and budget allow.
In some cases a well-fitting denture can be adapted to clip onto implants, but often it’s better to make a new one designed for the job from the start. We’ll look at what you’re wearing now and give you an honest answer at your consultation rather than assume either way.

There are two parts to it: cleaning the denture itself, much as you would a normal one, and keeping the implants and gums clean where the attachments sit, usually with a soft toothbrush and interdental brushes. The main difference is removability. Implant-retained dentures clip onto a small number of implants, and you take them out to clean them, whereas full-mouth restoration fixes your teeth permanently onto more implants, so only your dentist removes them. Implant-retained dentures usually need fewer implants and cost less, while fixed teeth feel closest to natural teeth and stay in all the time. Neither is simply better; it comes down to your priorities and your bone, and we’ll compare both honestly with you.
The implants are placed under local anaesthetic, so you won’t feel pain during the procedure, and sedation is available if you’d prefer to feel more relaxed. Afterwards, it’s normal to have some tenderness for a few days. The implants then need a few months to fuse with the bone, and you won’t be left without a denture in the meantime, once healing is complete.
