Eight simple steps to a healthier mouth  3-6 year olds

 

1)   Regular dental check ups at least every 6 months

 

2)   Drinks

·  a) Use a straw for any drinks except water

·  b) Avoid drinking from bottles, especially fizzy drinks

·  c) Only water except at meal times

·    d) No food or drink (except water) after brushing teeth at night

·         e) At most 4 sugary foods/drinks a day & only with meals

 

3) Food

·  a) 5 portions of fruit & vegetables a day

·    b) No snacks between meals

·    c) Sugar free chewing gum after or between meals

 

4) Tooth-brushing

·    a) An adult to supervise or assist the child

·    b) Use a small headed, soft bristled toothbrush

·    c) Brush last thing at night and at least one other time during the day

·    d) For at least 2 minutes

·    e) Some people find electric toothbrushes easier to use.  Battery operated ones are not recommended.

 

5) Toothpaste

·  a) Use a pea sized amount

·    b) At least 1,350 p.p.m. Fluoride (check the label)

·    c) Spit out the toothpaste, don’t swallow

·    d) Do not rinse after brushing

 

6) Fluoride

·    a) Topical fluoride from your dentist 2-4 times a year

 

7) If taking medications, use sugar free medications wherever possible

 

8) Stop bad habits such as

·    a)Thumb sucking

·    b) Any biting habits including biting nails or pens
