Seven simple steps to a healthier mouth – 0-3 year olds

 

  1. Regular dental check ups at least every 6 months

 

  1. Drinks
    • a) Breast feeding is best for babies
    • b) Discourage bottle feeding after 1 years old
    • c) Once no longer bottle feeding use a straw for any drinks except

water and particularly discourage drinking from bottles

·      d) Do not add sugar when weaning

·      e) Only water except at meal times

·      f)  No food or drink (except water) after brushing teeth at night

·      g) At most 4 sugary foods/drinks a day & only with meals

 

    3. Food

·      a) Do not add sugar when weaning

·      b) 5 portions of fruit & vegetables a day                           

·      c) No snacks between meals

 

        4. Tooth-brushing

·      a) Adults to brush the teeth for the child

·      b) Start as soon as you see the first tooth

·      c) Use a small, soft bristled brush

·               d) Brush last thing at night and at least one other time during the day if possible.

·      e) Spend at least 6 seconds per tooth

·               f)  Some people find electric toothbrushes easier to use. Battery operated ones are not recommended.

 

5. Toothpaste

·      a) Use a thin smear of toothpaste – roughly half a pea

·      b) At least 1,000 p.p.m. Fluoride (check the label)

 

6. If taking medications, use sugar free ones wherever possible

 

7. Stop bad habits such as

·      a) Thumb sucking

·      b) Any biting habits including biting nails or pens
